Photobiocatalysts tame nitrogen-centred radicals. A highlight in Nature Catalysis

Dr. Garcia-Borràs has been invited to write a highlight in the News & Views section of Nature Catalysis journal to describe the significance of a new-to-nature photobiocatalytic reaction developed by team led by Huimin Zhao at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Binju Wang at Xiamen University, and Dongping Zhong at The Ohio State University. In a recent publication in Nature Catalysis (Zhang, Z. et al. Nat. Catal. https://doi.org/10.1038/s41929-023-00994-5 (2023)), this research team describe an innovative strategy to achieve highly enantioselective intermolecular radical hydroamination reactions, which combines the power of the photocatalytic properties of the natural flavine mononucleotide (FMN) cofactor with enzymatic catalysis.

In this highlight, Dr. Garcia-Borràs provides an overview of the major findings reported by Zhao and co-workers, and a perspective of the impact that this work may have in the field of the biocatalysis and chemical synthesis.
