The ACS Catalysis journal features on its front cover of the October 2025 issue the research article “Million-Fold Activation of C–H Bonds by Fluorinated Nonheme FeIV=O Complexes via Second Sphere Equatorial Substitution and Catalytic Epoxidation to Boot” by Prof. Marcel Swart in collaboration with Prof. Lawrence Que Jr group.
Replacing the methyl groups of a tetramethylcyclam N4-macrocyclic ligand by polyfluorinated arenes has a dramatic effect on the oxidative power of oxoiron(IV) complexes. A million-fold acceleration for both hydrogen-atom and oxygen-atom transfer reactions is observed here through a combination of synthesis, catalysis, spectroscopy and theory.
