Talking with: Gemma Font

Gemma Font was graduated in Chemistry at the University of Girona and she performed the master in the Institute of Computational Chemistry and Catalysis (IQCC) and she did the master thesis between the IQCC and the Proter & Gamble (in Belgium) in the field of two type of natural BOLA surfactants. Then, she worked as a associate researcher in Procter & Gamble in Belgium. Nowadays, and since November 2021, she is an R&D Lab Technician in miDiagnostic (in Belgium).

  • Since you completed the MACMoM, what has been your career trajectory?

Since completing the MACMoM program, my career trajectory has been quite positive. During these past three years, I have grown as a Researcher and I have gained a deep understanding of how R&D and more accurately research in the industry works. This has opened up various opportunities in the field; from the formulation of hand dish soap products for different regions through how DNA binds and interacts on silica surfaces.

  • How do you remember those years studying in the Institute?

My years studying in the Institute of Computational Chemistry and Catalysis were unforgettable, from doing my BSc thesis on a organometallics topic to the MSc program which offered a unique hybrid approach, combining experimental and theoretical-computational methods.

I must say, by that time, I was not really fond of the theoretical and computational methodologies, but now I can see how important it is to have some basic knowledge and how it is applicable in many other disciplines.

  • Why did you choose to pursue the MACMoM?

I chose to pursue the MACMoM program because I was passionate about learning how catalysis and its relevance to the chemical industry could make a substantial impact. I saw it as an opportunity to gain in-depth knowledge and skills in this field, as well as the chance to go into another country to do an Industry Internship.

  • Could you please share your experience in the master’s program? Is there anything noteworthy you’d like to mention?

The MACMoM program was a highly valuable experience for me. It allowed me to bridge my existing expertise with the world of catalysis and molecular modelling. The fact that the main courses were taught by people working on the field enables a hands-on a more practical approach.

  • Do you believe that choosing to study the MACMoM has been beneficial for your current job? Has it allowed you or will it allow you to reach the professional position you aspire to?

Choosing to study the MACMoM has been beneficial for me as someone who has a background in chemistry and works in research. As of my current job I would say the master’s program has empowered me to apply my skills and knowledge to the different challenges I encounter on a daily basis.

I am certainly convinced that this knowledge has made me a valuable asset, and I anticipate it will continue to play a role in my pursuit of higher professional positions that align with my goals and aspirations.

  • What do you expect your life will be in the future? Do you have any specific career goals?

Looking ahead to the future, I envision my career evolving within the R&D industry, and I would say that as long as I can contribute and have a meaningful impact on the development of cutting-edge products or sustainable processes I will be happy and fulfilled as a scientist.
