Last Friday, the IQCC organized a meeting to show the documentary Picture a Scientist and a round table with Assumpció Vila Simon, Anna Pla-Boix and Carme Font-Paz to highlight gender inequality in science during the Science Week.
The film tells the stories of several prominent female researchers and brings to light the barriers that they encountered, including cases of discrimination and harassment. Biologist Nancy Hopkins, chemist Raychelle Burks and geologist Jane Willenbring take viewers on an in-depth journey into their own experiences in the sciences, ranging from brutal
bullying to years of subtle slights. Along the way, from small labs to spectacular fieldwork, we meet scientific luminaries – including social scientists, neuroscientists, and psychologists – who provide new perspectives on how to make science more diverse, equitable, and open to all.
The round table discussion highlighted how the UdG is doing well in this aspect, with already since 2003 a dedicated unit for gender balance, with the second edition of the Equality Plan (2021), and many active discussions and implementations of including gender issues in curricula and university committees. The international dimension was represented by the Young Academy of Europe (YAE), which participates in the CALIPER project: Linking research and innovation for gender equality (HorEur, 2020-2023). It was a lively discussion that highlighted current situations and future improvements.
