New Full Professors: Prof. Lluís Blancafort, Prof. Miquel Costas and Prof. Xavi Ribas

Last month, three PIs of the Institut de Químicia Computacional i Catàlisi (IQCC) were promoted to Full professor at the University of Girona: Prof. Lluís Blancafort, Prof. Miquel Costas and Prof. Xavi Ribas.

Lluís Blancafort

Lluís Blancafort received his degree in chemical engineering at the Institut Químic de Sarrià (Barcelona) in 1991. He obtained his PhD in 1996 from the University of Würzburg, for research on the reactivity of alpha-peroxylactones. From 1997 to 2002, he carried out a postdoctoral research at King’s College London, working on the computation of excited-state mechanisms. In 2002, he joined the University of Girona as a Ramón y Cajal fellow and became associate professor in 2007. His main research interests are the theory and computation of excited states and non-adiabatic processes, including excited-state potential energy surfaces and dynamics, and theoretical modelling of melanin.

Miquel Costas

Miquel Costas pursued PhD studies in the group of Prof. A Llobet in the University of Girona (UdG). Research work during the PhD involved scientific stays at Texas A&M (Prof D. H. R. Barton,1996), and in Basel (Prof. A. Zuberbüehler, 1998). After defending his PhD, he moved to the group of Prof. L. Que, Jr, at the University of Minnesota with a Fellowship of Fundació La Caixa. He returned to UdG in 2002 with a contract from the Ramón y Cajal program and he was appointed Professor Titular in 2003. His research interests involve biologically inspired design of inorganic reactivity and catalysis and supramolecular chemistry.

Xavi Ribas

Xavi Ribas obtained his PhD in Chemistry in 2001 at the University of Girona (UdG). From 2002 to 2004, he performed a postdoc research at the Materials Science Institute of Barcelona (ICMAB-CSIC). In 2005, he returned the University of Girona as a Juan de la Cierva fellow and became associate professor in 2006. His main research interests are:
a) Sustainable C-X and C-H functionalization catalyzed by firs-row transition metals
b) Mechanistic knowledge of catalysis by metals of group 11 (Cu, Ag, Au)
c) Supramolecular nanocapsules for fullerene purification and regioselective functionalization
d) Catalysis in the confined space

Many congratulations Lluís, Miquel and Xavi!
